How to Document Your Bequest or Estate Gift

Oakland University recognizes that gifts are subject to change depending on your personal or economic circumstances. Regardless of that reality, by documenting your planned gift intentions in advance, we are better able to implement your wishes in the future.    

1. Please Contact Us to let us know that you have included us in your will or trust or have designated us a beneficiary of another asset.
2. We will send you a form we use to collect important information about the gift and your preferences.
3. We ask that you complete the form and return it to us along with a copy of one of the following:

1. The relevant portion of your will or living trust document naming Oakland University.
2. The relevant portion of your retirement-plan beneficiary designation with available pertinent plan information (plan type, name of account owner, plan administrator, most recent market value information, date).

Peace of Mind

Our goal is simply to make sure that when your gift arrives, we will be able to use it according to your wishes. By sharing your plans with us in advance, we are able to assist you or your attorney with specific language or gift agreements that meet both legal and University requirements. You will have peace of mind knowing that your legacy will be what you want it to be.

Designate a Purpose for Your Gift

Many people wish to impact a specific area with their future gift. By designating a purpose in advance, you will know what your future gift will be used to accomplish, such as:

• Restricted or unrestricted endowment
• Financial aid or scholarship support
• Academic department or discipline
• Athletics or the Arts

Inspire Others to Give

Estate gifts are a crucial component of continuing support for Oakland University. By documenting your gift intentions and allowing us to tell your story, you inspire other alumni and friends to do the same.

Recognition and Appreciation

We truly appreciate your gift intentions. When you tell us about your gift, we will welcome you into the Vision Society and include your name on the donor recognition wall located in the Oakland Center. If you prefer less recognition, we are happy to offer other options to ensure your privacy is maintained.
